Goya Self-portrait

Here is a fairly high-contrast self-portrait by Goya. Look at the shapes and forms within the shadows, especially the figure: they group together to form the larger shapes while still being differentiated enough to remain interesting in themselves-- variety in unity. The composition is focused and instantly readable, yet the longer you look the more you find to see.
